Band of Brothers

(13 votes)

Band of Brothers tv seriesThis is the story of "E" Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from their initial training starting in 1942 to the end of World War II. They parachuted behind enemy lines in the early hours of D-Day in support of the landings at Utah beach, participated in the liberation of Carentan and again parachuted into adventure during Operation Market Garden. They also liberated a concentration camp and were the first to enter Hitler's mountain retreat in Berchtesgarten. A fascinating tale of comradeship that is, in the end, a tale of ordinary men who did extraordinary things.

The Band of Brothers miniseries details, if at times exaggerated or condensed, the real-life exploits of Easy Company during the Second World War over the course of ten episodes, starting with their basic training at the Currahee training site and ending with the capitulation of Germany. The experiences of Major Richard Winters are a primary focus, as he attempts to keep his men together and safe. While the series stars a large ensemble cast, episodes generally feature one character prominently, following their particular adventures during certain events (for example, the Siege of Bastogne & Operation Market Garden).

As the series is based on real-life events, characters befall the same fate as their real world counterparts. Numerous characters either die or sustain injuries, some of which lead to them being sent home or escaping from the hospital to rejoin their comrades at the battlefront. The experiences and the moral, mental, and physical hurdles the soldiers must overcome are central to the story.

Almost all the main actors were cast because of their close physical resemblance to the real-life soldiers they were portraying.

Tom Hanks, ‘Steven Spielberg’ , and Stephen Ambrose showed each of the scripts around to real-life soldiers of Easy Company to guarantee authenticity.

In "Crossroads", the British para commander is referred to as a Brigadier General and is wearing a general officer's cap badge. There has been no such rank in the British Army since the 1920s. The equivalent, Brigadier, is not a general officer and wears a different cap badge.

At the end of "Crossroads" when Winters is talking to Nixon, the bayonet in Winters' belt disappears and reappears between shots.

More than 2,000 extras worked on the miniseries during the course of production

The Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire, previously host to part of the Saving Private Ryan (1998) shoot, became the principal location, and sets of the English, Dutch and French sites, including a river and massive dykes, were created there.

The actors endured a grueling ten day boot camp where they learned the basics, from how to wear a uniform and stand at attention, to sophisticated field tactics and parachute jump training. The average day was 16 hours long, beginning at 5:00 a.m., rain or shine, with strenuous calisthenics and a three-to-five-mile run, followed by hours of tactical training, including weapons handling and jump preparation.

The wardrobe department hired the Corcoran Boot Co. to manufacture 500 pairs of paratrooper jump boots to the original Army specifications.

All of the 1,200 civilian costumes were authentic vintage clothing.

One-third of a million pounds of recycled paper were used to create the snow for the forest set -- the largest ever used in a production -- and it took four weeks to dress the entire set. The total budget for the miniseries was $120,000,000. Of that, construction costs were $17,000,000.

The dummies were modeled after auto crash test dummies, so they had the proper weight and dimensions, and their joints behaved like human joints. When the dummy took a hit, the electromagnet was released and the dummy crumpled as a human would.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair personally met Steven Spielberg to request that the series be filmed in the UK. In return Spielberg gave Blair's son, 'Euan Blair (I)', a job as a runner in the production.

John Amsterdam, a brilliant NYPD homicide detective is immortal. He is 400 years old, but his body structure is that of a 35-year-old. Amsterdam was a Dutch soldier in the year 1642 when he stepped in front of a sword to save the life of a Native American girl during a massacre of her tribe. The girl in turn rescued Amsterdam by weaving an ancient spell that conferred immortality upon him. It was also prophesied that he would not age until he finds his one true love, and only then will he become whole and ready for mortality.
