The O.C.

(7 votes)

The O.C. tv seriesEnsemble drama revolving around the young adult community of the Orange County area. A street-smart teen winds up in the high-class society of Newport Beach, sparking something of an edgier take on the Melrose Place-esque premise.

Ryan Atwood is a troubled teenage youth from the wrong side of the tracks in Los Angeles who finds himself on his own after he is thrown out of his own house. He finds a place to stay in the posh home of the Cohens in the wealthy community of Newport Beach, the O.C. (Orange County), California. Ryan is accepted by the stern but compassionate Sandford "Sandy" Cohen, a lawyer who represented Ryan in the past for his miss-deeds. But Sandy's wife, Kirsten, aware of Ryan's criminal history, is wary of this new house guest. The Cohen's son Seth bonds with Ryan quickly and shows him the ropes of the community and vice versa for Ryan giving advice to Seth about life and love. Ryan develops a crush on Marissa Cooper a neighbor girl who lives down the street and has problems with her not-so-sheltered existence in dealing with her distant father Jimmy and weak-willed mother Julie. Also, Marissa's best friend, Summer is oblivious to the crush that Seth has on her, while taking a liking to Ryan. And so begins a new life for Ryan, the Cohens, the Coopers, and basically everyone else in the wealthy, picturesque, secretive, turbulent community of Orange County.

Due to labor union salary rules about filming outside of Los Angeles County, the show is actually filmed at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach (40 miles away from the actual Newport Beach) to reduce filming costs.

The Cohen's pool is only four feet deep, so the cast do the pool scenes on their knees.

Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) says in an episode "I'm not reading that, that's like 'The Ring'. I don't wanna die." Adam Brody appears in The Ring (2002).

Adam Brody originally auditioned for the part of Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie).

Josh Schwartz, the creator of "The O.C." (2003), who went to school in Providence, RI at the Wheeler School often includes references to his former teachers and friends, including on episode in which he refers to "Schmidt's bio", Schmidt having been his biology teacher. Renee Wheeler is also named after the Wheeler school.

Peter Gallagher and Mischa Barton were the first to actors to be signed to the show. The part that the producers had the most problems casting was Ryan, so the last actor to sign was 'Benjamin McKenzie' who got cast in the last minute.

In the first couple of episodes, the Cohens have a maid and the Coopers have a dog. Somehow the maid and dog disappeared without a trace during the first season.

Kelly Rowan is only 14 years older than Adam Brody, who plays her son.

Melinda Clarke Julie Cooper-Nichol, actually read for the part of the perfect mother, Kirsten Cohen. In The Pilot, there just wasn't enough material for her to read as Julie, so she was brought in to read for the Kirsten part. The role of Kirsten eventually went to Canadian actress Kelly Rowan.

The character name Taylor Townsend is eerily similar to the neighboring towns mention in Bissinger's Friday Night Lights. One is Taylor, another is Townsend.

Caleb's wife and Kirsten and Hailey's mother's name was Rose Nichol. She, like Kirsten, suffered from alcoholism.

Every episode title begins with "The".

New Amsterdam
John Amsterdam, a brilliant NYPD homicide detective is immortal. He is 400 years old, but his body structure is that of a 35-year-old. Amsterdam was a Dutch soldier in the year 1642 when he stepped in front of a sword to save the life of a Native American girl during a massacre of her tribe. The girl in turn rescued Amsterdam by weaving an ancient spell that conferred immortality upon him. It was also prophesied that he would not age until he finds his one true love, and only then will he become whole and ready for mortality.
