(5 votes)

Flor y Canela In a Mexican mining village, circa 1940, lives María de la Canela nicknamed Marianela. She is a dirty and rather plain orphan who's despised by the villagers for her poor appearance and because they think she has inherited her mother's mental illness. Marianela's mother killed herself by jumping in a creek and it is there that the poor girl goes to hold conversations with her mother's ghost. The only person who cares for Marianela is rich boy Pablo.

Pablo is blind and Marianela becomes his guide. Because he is unable to see his helper, he imagines her to be incredibly beautiful and won't hear any opinions to the contrary. Pablo's father has arranged his marriage to Florentina, the notary's daughter. The marriage is planned for after the operation that Pablo will undergo to restore his sight. Tomás, a leading ophthalmologist has advised that Pablo should travel to USA to be operated. Meanwhile Florentina and Marianela become friends. Pablo's operation is successful and he returns hoping to marry Marianela. However, when he sees her, he is appalled by her looks. He turns to Florentina who fulfill his ideal of feminine beauty, but she's fallen for Carlos, a mining engineer married to a frivolous woman. A desperate Marianela tries to kill herself and is rescued by Tomas who starts educating her and trying to teach her to wash herself and dress better. It just happens that during his instruction period, Tomás falls for Marianela.
