What is 316 Stainless Steel
What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
Alloys are frequently added on steel to enhance its desired properties. This stainless steel grade is marine, often referred to as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of corrosive environments.
There are many types of stainless-steel 316. Common types include L and F as well as N and H variations. They are all slightly different and each serves a different purpose. L indicates that 316L steel has the lowest carbon content, which is below 316.
312, 316, and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Though they're similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both exhibit better corrosion resistance and have greater strength at high temperatures. They are also not able to be hardened with heat treatments and can be easily shaped and stretched.
What is the difference between 316 as well as 316L? Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon than 316. Although it has a low carbon levels, 316L is very similar to 316 in virtually every way. The cost is similar and both are tough and resistant to corrosion, making them ideal for difficult-to-reach situations.
However, for projects that require a lot of welding, 316L may be a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more susceptible to corrosion from welding over an 316L (corrosion to the weld). However, the 316 can be annealed and cooled to resist the attenuation of welding. This is a suitable stainless steel for use in high temperature, high corrosion processes, which is why it is so popular in marine and construction.
No 316, nor 316L is the most economical option. The 304 is comparable to 304L however, the price is much lower. They aren't as strong as the 317 or 317L that are more durable, with higher molybdenum concentration and better durability overall.
